Earl and Hilda Jones's passion for Spanish Tempranillo inspired a change in careers and a move across the continent to attempt what had neve been done; produce world class Tempranillo wine in America. The goal was to find, not soil, but a regional climate similar to Spain's famous Tempranillo producing regions. They planted the first commercial vineyard of Tempranillo in the Pacfic Northwest in 1995 in Oregon's Umpqua Valley. Their research paid off, marked by early success and accolades in international wine competitions.
Encouraged that site-climate matching had proven successful with Tempranillo, they continued to explore other varieties suitable to their property. This included great success with classic Rhone varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier! Today, Abacela farms 17 different grape varieties over 76 acres on their estate The philosophy is simple; sustainably grow the highest quality fruit possible and produce wines with exceptional quality and character, reflecting the passion, dedication, and hardwork that go into each bottle.
